The Kaduwela Magistrate's Court today (05) ordered the acquittal of the 13 suspects who were arrested by Thalangama Police during the 'Aragalaya' period in 2022.
They were arrested on May 4, 2022, and produced before the Kaduwela Court. Subsequently, they were released on bail for delivering a letter to the Speaker near Polduwa Junction in Battaramulla.
The 13 social activists, intending to hand over a memorandum to inform the Speaker regarding the country's situation during the 'Aragalaya', were arrested by Talangama Police. They were then detained by Maharagama Police and presented to the Kaduwela Magistrate's Court.
At that time, nearly one hundred and fifty lawyers appeared for these 13 suspects.
The police had filed several charges against these suspects before the court, including creating an organized illegal assembly, being members of an illegal assembly, and obstructing the police and the public.
The case was heard in the Kaduwela Magistrate's Court for two years, and the Kaduwela Magistrate, Mrs. Chanima Wijebandara, ordered the acquittal of the 13 suspects.
