The Nuwara Eliya High Court Judge Wiraj Weerasuriya has sentenced a volunteer teacher to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually abusing a schoolgirl.
The accused, a resident of Osbon Estate under Nortonbridge police jurisdiction, faced legal consequences as the Nortonbridge Police arrested him on charges of sexually abusing a 16-year-old schoolgirl between January 1st and January 31st, 2010.
The High Court judge handed down the sentence and ordered the accused to pay a fine of Rs. 5,000. Non-compliance with the fine will result in a three-month extension of the imprisonment period.
Additionally, the judge mandated a compensation of Rs. 500,000 to be paid to the victim. Failure to fulfill this compensation requirement will lead to an extended imprisonment period of two more years.
