The Excise Department has notified nine liquor manufacturing companies that they must promptly settle outstanding excise duty payments.
These companies collectively owe a total of Rs 7.2 billion in arrears.
Excise Commissioner General M.J. Gunasiri said that swift action will be taken to recover these outstanding amounts, noting that legal action has already been initiated against two companies that have failed to pay.
The nine companies in question, which failed to settle their arrears by June 15, 2023, are as follows: W.M. Mendis Company, North West Distilleries Private Company, Global Blenders & Bottlers Private Company, McCallum Brewing Company, Kalutara Distilleries Company, Synergy Distilleries Private Company, Randenigala Distilleries Lanka Company, Higurana Distilleries Private Company, and Royal Ceylon Distilleries Private Company.
However, it was reported that Finland Distilleries Company has fully cleared its outstanding tax liability of Rs 57,512,910.90 by December 2023. Consequently, the Excise Department has issued the requisite clearance to the company.
