Rev. Fr. Jude Chrysantha, in his capacity as the Director of the Archdiocesan Commission for Social Communications, has strongly refuted accusations made by Public Security Minister Tiran Alles regarding an alleged appeal made to the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) on behalf of Fr. Cyril Gamini after a road accident.
Convening a special press conference on Friday (22 Dec.), Fr. Chrysantha categorically stated that no such plea for help was made by Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith to Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon. He further disclosed that the Cardinal became aware of the incident only the following morning, making it logistically impossible for him to have contacted Tennakoon the night before seeking assistance.
Minister Tiran Alles recently claimed that the Cardinal appealed to Tennakoon for help following a road accident involving Fr. Gamini, who was subsequently taken to the police station. The Minister alleged that Fr. Cyril Gamini personally thanked the Acting IGP for his assistance.
Fr. Chrysantha challenged Minister Alles to refrain from spreading what he termed as "falsehoods" and urged the Minister to provide evidence if any such incident occurred. He emphasized that at the time of the incident, Fr. Cyril Gamini had already reached a settlement with the aggrieved party and had no expectation of someone alerting the Acting IGP.
Expressing bewilderment, Fr. Jude Chrysantha pointed out that Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith remains unsure of who may have made the alleged appeal on his behalf, emphasizing that the Cardinal has not delegated such powers to any individual or party. The press conference aimed to set the record straight and dispel any misinformation surrounding the incident.
