Sri Lankan journalists Mrs. Vinita M. Gamage & Mrs. Sunanda Hettiarachchi arrived in the island from India last night , winning the "Ladli" award given for the application of media reporting on society from a feminist point of view in a sensitive and optimal manner.
It was the first time Sri Lanka received this award and this award was presented to them at a ceremony held at the National Performing Arts Center in Mumbai, India.
It was organized by United Nations Population Fund, South Asian Federation of Journalists and India's Population First.
Mrs. Vinita M. Gamage, who won this award, works as the assistant editor of Mawbima news paper, and Mrs. Sunanda Hettiarachi has worked as the former director of Channel I television.
The Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity (LMAAGS) celebrate individuals and organisations in the media and advertising industry who highlight gender concerns through their work. The awards were first introduced in 2007 with the support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). In 2017, they gained international recognition with the support of IAA (India Chapter), expanding to cover Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Mauritius. The awards are now known as the South Asia Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity (SALMAAGS) and this edition is being supported by AFAA and SAWM
