Nearly 100 inmates reportedly escaped from the Kandakadu rehabilitation camp in Welikanda this afternoon (11), and a joint operation was launched to find them.
Police said a group of around 100 inmates who were undergoing residential rehabilitation in the camp broke the fence of the camp and escaped at around 5:30 pm on Monday.
They suspect that this group has escaped amid a tense situation in the camp.
A joint operation had been launched by the Police and the Army to locate the escaped inmates.
Police said at least 15 escaped inmates have been apprehended during the operation.
It was reported that the group had escaped to the Kandakadu forest area, and that searching for them has become more difficult at night.
