A person was apprehended at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) for attempting to smuggle a cache of over 20,000 foreign cigarettes, valued at more than Rs. 2 million, into the country, as confirmed by the police.
The illicit stock of cigarettes was discovered during an examination of the individual's luggage. The suspect, arriving from Dubai on the morning of December 11th, was found in possession of 144 cartons containing a total of 22,800 foreign cigarettes.
Law enforcement took immediate custody of the confiscated cigarettes, while the suspect, identified as a resident of Pussallewa in Gampola, is scheduled to appear before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court.
