The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has revealed that initial data indicates lightning strikes on the Kotmale to Biyagama transmission line as the cause of the island-wide power breakdown that occurred yesterday, December 9th.
The power outage, which resulted in major disruptions across the entire island, was attributed to a breakdown in the transmission line by the CEB, the country's power monopoly.
The spokesman for the CEB confirmed that lightning strikes were responsible for the disruption.
However, during today's parliamentary session, State Minister of Power and Energy, Indika Anuruddha, announced that two separate inquiries would be conducted by the Ministry of Power and Energy and the CEB to investigate the incident further.
The breakdown in the transmission line from Kotmale to Biyagama led to widespread power outages, impacting businesses, households, and public services.
Meanwhile, the CEB and the Ministry of Power and Energy are expected to conduct thorough investigations to determine the exact cause of the breakdown and to identify measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
