In a targeted search operation near Baththanangunduwa Island, the Sri Lanka Navy recovered a parcel weighing over 4kg of gold from the depths of Puttalam Lagoon. The Navy suspects that the valuable cache was intentionally submerged by smugglers. The operation also resulted in the apprehension of two suspects and one dinghy, believed to be associated with the illicit activity.
The Sri Lanka Navy consistently conducts search operations and patrols in coastal and sea areas to thwart various nefarious activities originating from sea routes. As part of these ongoing efforts, SLNS Vijaya in the Northwestern Naval Command executed a special operation in the sea area near Baththanangunduwa Island on December 8th. During this operation, naval personnel retrieved a suspicious parcel from the depths of Puttalam Lagoon. Subsequently, the parcel containing over 4kg of gold was taken into naval custody.
The arrested suspects, identified as residents of Kalpitiya aged 27 and 35, along with the seized gold and dinghy, were handed over to Customs Preventive Office, Katunayake, for further legal proceedings. The Navy remains vigilant in its commitment to curbing illegal activities through maritime channels.
