Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has initiated the distribution of the promised US $50,000 award (RS. 16m) to the ground staff of the RPICS in Colombo and PICS in Kandy, in recognition of their tireless efforts during the Asia Cup 2023.
A total of 138 members of the RPICS ground staff, including both permanent and contract employees, were acknowledged for their dedication and hard work during the tournament.
Meanwhile, 115 members of the PICS, Kandy, ground staff are set to receive their well-deserved rewards on Friday.
The ground staff at both venues played a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless execution of the Asia Cup, overcoming adverse weather conditions that prevailed during the tournament. Their responsibilities included maintaining practice facilities, preparing the outfield, tending to pitches, and managing the covering and uncovering of the grounds, among other related services.
The reward payments, totaling US $50,000, were distributed to curators, turf supervisors, ground staff, and technical staff who contributed significantly to the success of the tournament. The National Curator, Godfrey Dabrera, personally handed out the rewards to the RPICS ground staff on Wednesday.
The awards, jointly granted by the Asian Cricket Council and SLC, signify the collaborative effort of both institutions in recognizing and appreciating the invaluable contributions of the ground staff. With each organization contributing US $25,000, this initiative serves as a token of gratitude for the unsung heroes behind the scenes who ensured the Asia Cup ran smoothly despite the challenges posed by adverse weather conditions.
