In a stunning display of skill and determination, Sri Lanka's Youth Scrabble team emerged victorious once again at the WESPA Youth Cup 2023, also known as the World Youth Scrabble Championship 2023.
Not only did they secure the coveted title of "Best Team" for the second consecutive year, but they also swept the top three spots among 142 players from 17 nations.
The 10-member Sri Lankan Scrabble team showcased their exceptional abilities, making history by becoming the first country to claim all three top places in the tournament's history.
Hivin Dilmith, a 16-year-old student from Mahinda College in Galle, was crowned the World Youth Scrabble Champion 2023, solidifying his position as a rising star in the world of competitive Scrabble. But the Sri Lankan dominance didn't end there.
Adheesha Dissanayake, a 15-year-old prodigy from Gateway College in Colombo, secured the title of first runner-up, while Kavindu Malawaraarachchi from Royal College in Colombo claimed the second runner-up spot.
The trio's outstanding performance has not only brought glory to their nation but has also cemented Sri Lanka's reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the Scrabble world.
In addition to their individual successes, Dissanayake also triumphed in the World Under 16 Championship, showcasing his versatility and talent across different age categories.
Furthermore, Imad Irshad, another student from Gateway College in Colombo, achieved the highest score of the game, an impressive 708 points.
The World Youth Scrabble Championship, held from December 1st to December 3rd, 2023, saw participation from players representing Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Romania, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Sri Lanka's triumphs in 2022, including Best Team, Under 16 World Champion, Best Female Player, Group Stage Winner, and Group Stage Runner-up, laid the foundation for their remarkable success this year.
