US Ambassador Julie Chung expresses apprehension over the persistent utilization of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) in Sri Lanka, emphasizing the crucial need to safeguard essential freedoms.
Taking to 'X' (formerly Twitter), Ambassador Chung voices concerns regarding the recurrent deployment of the contentious legislation for the apprehension of peaceful protestors and the alleged inhumane treatment of detainees in custody.
"It is imperative to uphold freedom of expression and ensure humane treatment of individuals in detention. Particularly as the government seeks to replace the PTA in alignment with its international commitments and implement substantial reforms, it must prioritize the protection of fundamental freedoms," remarked Ambassador Chung.
The contentious PTA is slated to be supplanted by Sri Lanka's new Anti-Terrorism Bill, prompted by criticisms of the PTA's repeated misuse and infringement upon various fundamental rights.
