Western Province Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon is likely to be appointed as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), replacing the retired IGP C.D. Wickremeratne, who concluded his fourth service extension on November 25.
Public Security Minister Tiran Alles reportedly discussed the appointment with President Ranil Wickremesinghe. The delay in the IGP appointment was previously attributed to differences between the President and the Minister over the proposed candidate.
According to the Constitution, the President is the appointing authority for the IGP position. Once the President makes the appointment, it must be approved by the Constitutional Council. The Council, headed by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, includes Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, along with three members from civil society, making it a ten-member body.
