More than 10,000 lakes across the island have completely dried up as a result of the ongoing drought, leading to a significant decrease in water levels in the main reservoirs, revealed Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.
The Agriculture Minister stated that efforts are underway to restore the damaged tanks prior to the arrival of the monsoon rains, based on the allocations received by the department.
The Meteorology Department has highlighted that due to the current El Niño process, the upcoming season is expected to receive good rainfall, while the subsequent season may experience dry conditions once again.
In light of this, the Minister emphasized the importance of renovating these tanks before the monsoon season to store more water and address the challenges faced by farmers effectively.
