The recent tragic death of an eight-month-old infant at Karapitya Hospital has raised concerns about the possibility of a community spread of Meningococcal disease.
The disease was first identified at Galle prison, where it has been spreading. The infant, who exhibited symptoms similar to Meningococcal disease, unfortunately passed away shortly after being admitted to Karapitya Hospital on Saturday (26).
Health authorities are currently investigating whether the death can be directly attributed to Meningococcal disease, which has been circulating within the prison. Dr. Konara Somaratne, the Regional Director of Health Services, stated that although they suspect the death may be linked to Meningococcal disease, confirmation is pending further investigations of the body samples.
The deceased infant was a resident of Thalapitiya.
In response to these developments, health officials are urging individuals to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever, chills, fatigue, vomiting, or cold hands and feet.
Tragically, two inmates have already lost their lives to Meningococcal disease, and several others are currently receiving treatment at Karapitiya Hospital.
The Ministry of Health has confirmed that the two deaths were directly caused by Meningococcal disease.
