The poultry association has announced a reduction of Rs. 100 per kilogram on the price of chicken, effective immediately.
According to Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.
The decision was made following a meeting held at the Ministry with representatives from various poultry associations.
During the meeting, Minister Amaraweera informed the attendees about the government's reduction of import tax on maize, which could potentially contribute to lowering chicken prices in the local market.
The import tax on maize was initially reduced from Rs. 75 per kilogram to Rs. 25 on August 17, with the objective of reducing the cost of animal feed made from maize.
While the Minister requested that the association members consider reducing the price by more than Rs. 100, their response was not favorable.
However, the association representatives did express willingness to explore the possibility of reducing the selling price of chicken by more than Rs. 100.
The reduction in chicken prices is expected to provide relief to consumers who have been facing rising food costs.
