Sri Lanka’s Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath is scheduled to address the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York today (28).
The high-level General Debate, which began on September 22 and concludes today, is being held under the theme “Better Together: 80 years and beyond – Reaffirming trust, transforming governance and delivering for all.”
Minister Herath is leading the Sri Lankan delegation and is expected to present the country’s national statement, focusing on Sri Lanka’s current situation, future plans and its foreign policy priorities.
During his visit, the Minister is also scheduled to hold discussions with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, senior UN officials and foreign ministers of several countries.
The General Debate is addressing key global issues including armed conflicts, humanitarian crises, climate change, socio-economic inequalities and challenges facing the multilateral system. Sustainable development, rising sea levels, pandemic preparedness, nuclear disarmament, human rights, digital governance and artificial intelligence are also among the issues receiving attention.
Minister Herath’s address is expected to outline Sri Lanka’s position on major international issues and highlight the country’s foreign policy priorities at the global level.
