Sri Lanka’s newly appointed Chinese Ambassador, Wei Huaxiang, met with Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage on Sunday (28) to discuss ways to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries in youth development and sports.
The meeting was held at the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, where the two sides discussed the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Sri Lanka and China.
Particular attention was given to expanding cooperation in youth development, youth exchange programmes and sports, with a focus on creating new opportunities for Sri Lankan youth.
During the meeting, Ambassador Wei Huaxiang said China could provide two additional dragon boats to Sri Lanka next year, further supporting the development of water sports in the country.
The importance of continued cooperation to develop the skills of Sri Lanka’s younger generation, provide them with international exposure and strengthen ties between the youth of the two countries was also highlighted.
Ambassador Wei Huaxiang assumed duties as China’s new Ambassador to Sri Lanka in August 2026.
Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs Dinindu Saman Hennayake, Ministry Secretary Aruna Bandara and officials from the Chinese Embassy were also present at the meeting.
