A complaint lodged with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over the alleged promotion of the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) at a Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) rally in Anuradhapura has been referred to the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) for investigation.
Police said the complaint was referred to the TID on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police.
The complaint was lodged yesterday by a group of civil society members identifying themselves as the “Joint Opposition”, following allegations that remarks made during the rally amounted to promoting or supporting the LTTE, which remains a proscribed organisation in Sri Lanka.
The Opposition had raised concerns on Sunday over remarks reportedly made at the rally, which was attended by several political figures, including former Minister Wimal Weerawansa and Parliamentarian Archchuna Ramanathan.
Addressing the rally, MP Archchuna Ramanathan referred to himself as a “Tiger” and criticised the public for electing a “fox”, in an apparent reference to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
