Prices of several popular flour-based short eats and eatery items have increased following a recent surge in the cost of wheat flour.
Harshana Rukshan, Chairman of the All-Island Canteen Owners' Association, said that prices of short eats have gone up by Rs. 5. This adjustment impacts popular items including parata, egg roti, vegetable roti, rolls, and patties. Additionally, the price of a string hopper has been increased by Re. 1, while hoppers have gone up by Rs. 2.
Meanwhile, the All-Island Bakery Owners' Association is reviewing the broader impact of the flour price hike on bread and other general bakery items. Association President N.K. Jayawardena stated that the central committee is scheduled to meet to determine whether a price revision is necessary, with a final decision to be formally announced to the media.
These revisions come in the wake of a decision by major suppliers—Prima Ceylon and Serendib Flour Mills—to increase the price of a kilogram of wheat flour by Rs. 17. Representatives from the milling companies explained that the price escalation was forced by persistent global economic pressures. Specifically, shipping expenses, maritime insurance costs, and international grain prices have risen significantly since the onset of the Middle East conflict.
