The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has urged all parties to act responsibly when making allegations concerning judges, lawyers and other individuals, stressing the need to protect public confidence in the justice system.
In an official statement, the BASL called on all sectors of the State and relevant stakeholders to respect the role of the judiciary and the administration of justice while addressing grievances through fair and accountable processes.
The association warned that personal attacks based on unverified allegations could erode public trust in the justice system and undermine the independence and integrity of the judicial process.
However, the BASL emphasized that the judiciary, like any institution exercising public power, must remain subject to lawful scrutiny and accountability. It said court judgments, the conduct of judges and judicial proceedings may be subject to responsible criticism when such criticism is based on fair and factual grounds.
The BASL further stated that if credible information or allegations arise concerning any judge, including the Chief Justice, such matters must be investigated objectively on the basis of reliable information, while strictly following due process and established procedures.
