The Sri Lanka Railway Department has issued a special circular aimed at restricting the use of social media during working hours and preventing the disclosure of sensitive information related to railway operations.

The department said the circular was issued after observing a growing trend among certain officers and employees to publish sensitive information on social media during working hours or in connection with their official duties.

According to the department, the disclosure of such information through social media could seriously undermine the credibility of the railway service, passenger safety and institutional discipline.

Under the new circular, only the General Manager of Railways, the official railway spokesperson and the Information Officer are authorised to provide official information from the department to external parties or the media.

The circular, issued under the signature of the General Manager of Railways, further states that strict legal and disciplinary action will be taken against officers who violate its instructions.
