The Sub-Inspector who led the team that arrested a man at the centre of a viral video from the Ambalangoda Police Station has been transferred out of the station as an investigation into the incident continues.
The transfer was ordered by the Elpitiya Divisional Officer following the circulation of a video showing a man behaving disorderly inside the police station while alleging that police officers had assaulted his detained father.
A separate investigation has been launched under the supervision of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in charge of the Galle Division and the Galle District II Superintendent of Police.
According to police, the elderly man seen in the video was arrested on the night of August 24 after allegedly being found intoxicated and behaving disorderly on a road. Police said he attempted to flee during the arrest but fell, sustaining injuries that resulted in bleeding.
The man was taken to Balapitiya Hospital by Ambalangoda police officers on August 25, where he was examined by a Judicial Medical Officer. He was subsequently produced before the Additional Magistrate of Balapitiya, who ordered his release on bail.
The investigation is continuing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and the allegations made against the police officers.
