Police have issued a public warning regarding an increase in vehicle thefts driven by motorists and motorcyclists leaving their cars, vans, or bikes unattended and unsecured.
Addressing a press briefing today (21), Police Media Spokesperson and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) F.U. Wootler stated that investigators have received numerous reports of valuables and important documents left inside unattended vehicles being stolen alongside the automobiles.
Highlighting common vulnerabilities, ASP Wootler pointed out that many incidents occur because drivers—particularly three-wheeler and motorcycle operators—leave their engines running while stepping away, or carelessly leave the ignition keys inside the vehicle, making them easy targets for opportunistic criminals.
Authorities have also noted a rise in thefts where owners leave their cars, motorcycles, or three-wheelers parked outdoors at home without locking the gates, leaving the property easily accessible to thieves.
To mitigate these risks, police advise motorists parking in busy public areas to ensure their vehicles are monitored by nearby security personnel or staff members of commercial complexes. Drivers are further urged to avoid parking in dark or isolated spots at night, as such locations provide prime opportunities for criminals.
In the event of a vehicle theft, the public is urged to immediately contact the police emergency hotlines at 119 or 118, or to inform the nearest police station or police officer without delay.
