Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has called on the government to prioritize addressing the immediate economic hardships faced by the public rather than focusing on the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.

Speaking on the matter, Rajapaksa said there are more pressing issues that require the government’s immediate attention.

He pointed out that many people are struggling to meet their basic needs, including obtaining sufficient food.

Rajapaksa questioned the focus on what he described as unnecessary issues while the public continues to face difficulties in their day-to-day lives.

He said constitutional matters could be considered after addressing the urgent problems affecting the people.

Rajapaksa’s remarks come amid renewed debate over the proposed 22nd Amendment. The amendment has been a subject of political and legal discussion in Sri Lanka, with previous versions of the legislation also drawing attention over questions of executive powers and constitutional reform.
