Two suspects wanted in connection with a shooting at a birthday party held at a hotel in the Wattala area have been arrested after they were deported from India to Sri Lanka.

The suspects, who had allegedly fled to India illegally by boat following the shooting, were taken into custody by officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Bandaranaike International Airport on Thursday (August 13).

The arrested individuals have been identified as 30-year-old Maheshwaran Lucinath and 34-year-old Ganesan Vigneshwaran, both residents of the Wattala area.

According to police, the two suspects allegedly stormed a birthday party at a hotel in Wattala on the night of July 23 and opened fire before fleeing the country by boat and entering India illegally.

The suspects were deported from Chennai, India, and arrived at Bandaranaike International Airport at around 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. Indian security authorities had informed the CID officers at the airport about their deportation.

Accordingly, CID officers took the two suspects into custody immediately after the aircraft arrived in Sri Lanka.

The suspects were questioned at the airport, and statements were recorded by CID officers.

They were subsequently taken under heavy security to the Western Province North Crime Division for further investigations into the shooting incident.
