Sri Lanka is taking steps to introduce new regulations to prevent children from being exposed to dangerous activities for the sake of social media popularity and financial gain, Minister of Women and Child Affairs Saroja Paulraj has announced.
The Minister pointed out that various harmful practices are being observed on social media, including taking children to dangerous locations, making them use obscene language, involving them in content intended exclusively for adults, and creating content that exposes their sexuality.
She stressed that parents have no right to put their children’s privacy and safety at risk for the purpose of gaining popularity or earning money through social media.
The proposed regulations aim to address such practices and strengthen the protection of children from exploitation in the digital space.
