Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam has been released on bail after being produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court.

Kaduwela Magistrate Aruna Buddhadasa ordered that Kariyawasam be released on two surety bonds of Rs. 2 million each and imposed a travel ban on him.

The court proceedings, during which both sides presented their submissions, concluded at around 4.30 p.m. The Magistrate subsequently postponed the announcement of the bail order to consider the arguments presented by both parties.

Nearly three hours later, the Magistrate delivered a 17-page bail order after considering the submissions made by both sides.

The court ordered that Kariyawasam be released once the bail conditions were fulfilled.

The case relates to a statement made by Kariyawasam on August 3 concerning Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya. The Central Crime Investigation Bureau had launched an investigation into the statement.

Kariyawasam was subsequently arrested and produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court.
