The programme aims to establish 500 tea villages nationwide, supporting the government's vision of increasing Sri Lanka's annual tea production to 400 million kilograms by 2030.
In addition, the initiative seeks to boost the country's tea export earnings to US$2.5 billion, reinforcing Sri Lanka's position as one of the world's leading tea producers and exporters.
The Ceylon Tea Village programme is designed to modernize the smallholder tea sector, improve the livelihoods of small tea growers, and accelerate the sustainable development of the tea industry.
Key objectives of the programme include increasing green leaf yields and productivity, enhancing farmers' incomes, promoting value-added tea products, and integrating the tea industry with the tourism sector to create new economic opportunities.
The initiative will also introduce modern and sustainable cultivation practices, improve rural infrastructure, and strengthen producer cooperatives to build a more resilient and competitive tea sector.
The government expects the programme to play a vital role in achieving Sri Lanka's long-term tea industry development goals while ensuring sustainable growth and greater prosperity for tea-growing communities.
