Sri Lanka ranked 50th on the list, with TTW highlighting the country's rich culinary traditions, vibrant flavours, aromatic spices, fresh seafood, tropical ingredients and unique regional dishes. The publication described Sri Lanka as "a vibrant culinary destination where aromatic spices, tropical ingredients and centuries of cultural influences create unforgettable dining experiences, from bustling street-food stalls to elegant coastal restaurants."

TTW noted that Sri Lankan cuisine, from traditional rice and curry to hoppers, kottu, seafood delicacies and a variety of sweet treats, continues to attract food enthusiasts from around the world. The publication also highlighted Colombo, Galle, Kandy, Negombo, Ella, Jaffna, Mirissa, Nuwara Eliya, Hikkaduwa and Trincomalee as the island's must-visit food destinations, each offering distinctive regional flavours and authentic dining experiences.

The 2026 rankings placed Mexico as the world's top food destination, followed by Italy and Spain. The Top 50 list features leading culinary destinations from Europe, Asia-Pacific, the Americas, the Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East, recognising countries that have successfully preserved their culinary heritage while embracing innovation and sustainable food practices. Sri Lanka's inclusion is expected to further strengthen its appeal among international travellers seeking authentic food and cultural experiences.
