The Colombo Additional Magistrate’s Court has fixed September 21 for the next hearing of the case filed against former Minister Wimal Weerawansa and five others over a protest held in 2016 against the visit of then United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Prince Zeid Al Hussein.
When the case was taken up today (13), Colombo Additional Magistrate Lahiru Silva ordered that the further examination of evidence be continued on the next hearing date.
The case relates to a protest staged on February 6, 2016, in front of the United Nations office in Colombo, during which the accused allegedly obstructed traffic by blocking roads, including the Thummulla junction.
The Cinnamon Gardens Police filed charges against the group, alleging that the demonstration caused inconvenience to the public.
The accused include former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, Weerakumara Dissanayake, Jayantha Samaraweera, Roger Seneviratne and Piyasiri Wijenayake.
According to court proceedings, Weerawansa was absent when the case was called today, with his counsel submitting a medical report on his behalf.
