The President's Fund has launched the "Sarasavi Diriyo Abhiman" scholarship programme, a special initiative aimed at recognizing and supporting students with disabilities studying at Sri Lanka's state universities, ensuring that physical limitations do not stand in the way of their educational aspirations.
The inaugural ceremony of the programme is scheduled to be held on Saturday, July 11, at Temple Trees, under the patronage of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.
Under this initiative, all eligible students with disabilities currently enrolled in state universities across the country will be recognized for their determination and academic achievements. Each beneficiary will receive a one-time scholarship grant of Rs. 100,000, funded by the President's Fund.
During the inaugural event, 254 university students with disabilities will be honoured. In total, nearly 400 students have qualified to receive assistance through the programme.
In consideration of the travel difficulties faced by students from the Northern, North Central, and Eastern Provinces, separate recognition events for those regions are scheduled to be held in August.
The "Sarasavi Diriyo Abhiman" programme is a significant national initiative that acknowledges the dedication, abilities, and academic accomplishments of students with disabilities. It also reaffirms the Government's commitment to ensuring that no physical disability should become a barrier to pursuing higher education and reflects its broader vision of promoting social inclusion and empowerment.
