Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser and MP Namal Rajapaksa has criticised recent remarks describing military medals as “a piece of metal,” saying such statements diminish the sacrifices and achievements of members of the armed forces.
Addressing a public gathering in Kotapola, Matara, Rajapaksa said military decorations symbolise the bravery, dedication and service of war veterans, and should be accorded the respect they deserve.
He said it was inappropriate to refer to medals cherished by veterans and their families as merely “a piece of metal,” arguing that doing so overlooks the commitment and sacrifices made by those who served the country.
Rajapaksa also accused the government of failing to show due respect to former military personnel while pursuing legal proceedings against several retired security officials. He questioned whether efforts were being made to undermine the recognition and dignity afforded to members of the armed forces.
Commenting on the country’s economic situation, the MP criticised the government’s policies, claiming they had failed to address key issues affecting farmers, unemployed graduates and rising living costs.
