Sri Lanka has been named the Best Island in the World for 2026 by leading international travel platform Big 7 Travel, marking a significant achievement for the country's tourism industry.

The annual ranking, now in its seventh year, evaluates islands across the globe based on media coverage, social media popularity, travel trends, and editorial assessments.

Sri Lanka secured the top position thanks to its breathtaking 833-mile coastline, mist-covered central highlands, world-famous tea plantations, and extraordinary biodiversity. The country's rich cultural and historical heritage also played a key role in the recognition, with iconic attractions such as Yala National Park and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Sigiriya Rock Fortress highlighted among its standout destinations.

Big 7 Travel praised Sri Lanka for offering a rare combination of pristine beaches, diverse wildlife, ancient history, vibrant culture, and spectacular landscapes. The platform also echoed the famous words of 13th-century explorer Marco Polo, who described Sri Lanka as "the finest island of its size in all the world."

The top five islands in the 2026 rankings are:

Sri Lanka

Mo'orea, French Polynesia

Socotra, Yemen

Madeira, Portugal

Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

Tourism industry stakeholders believe the prestigious recognition will further strengthen Sri Lanka's global image as a premier travel destination and attract more international visitors in the coming years.

The accolade comes as Sri Lanka continues to expand its tourism offerings, showcasing its unique blend of nature, adventure, heritage, and hospitality to travelers from around the world.
