The authority stated that seven aircraft scheduled to land at Katunayake on the morning of May 22 were diverted to alternative airports due to adverse weather conditions. The precautionary measure was taken as intense rainfall affected visibility and safe landing conditions at the airport.
Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority, Captain Daminda Rambukwella, said that five of the diverted aircraft were rerouted to Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport.
The remaining two flights were diverted to airports in India, specifically Madurai and Cochin.
Authorities confirmed that weather conditions in Katunayake have since improved, allowing airport operations to resume normal activity. Passengers have been advised to stay in contact with their respective airlines for the latest flight updates.
