In a statement, the department said that minor flooding could affect areas including Ruwanwella, Seethawaka, Dompe, Dehiowita, Eheliyagoda, Yatiyanthota, and Bulathkohupitiya during this period.
According to the department, nearly 300 millimetres of significant rainfall has already been recorded in the upper catchment areas of the Kelani River Basin. Based on the prevailing weather conditions and an analysis of river water levels measured by gauges maintained within the basin, authorities have identified the possibility of minor flooding over the next 24 hours.
The Department of Irrigation has therefore advised residents living in the affected areas, as well as motorists and commuters using roads in those regions, to remain vigilant and exercise caution.
