According to the latest weather forecast, intermittent showers are expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is likely in some areas.
Several spells of rain are also forecast in the Northern Province and Anuradhapura District. Meanwhile, afternoon or evening thundershowers may develop in parts of Uva Province and the districts of Ampara and Batticaloa after 2.00 p.m.
Strong winds ranging between 30–40 kmph are expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, and Southern provinces.
Authorities have urged the public to take precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
Sea Areas to Experience Rough Conditions
Showers and thundershowers are expected in sea areas stretching from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle, while isolated showers may occur elsewhere around the island during the evening or night.
Southwesterly winds are forecast to strengthen, reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph in most sea areas. Wind speeds could rise up to 50–60 kmph in the coastal waters extending from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
The sea areas off these coasts are expected to be rough at times, while waters from Kankasanthurai to Batticaloa via Trincomalee and from Colombo to Galle may become fairly rough.
Wave heights are likely to increase to about 2.0–2.5 metres in sea areas from Mannar to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.
Fishermen and naval communities have been advised to remain vigilant, as temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers.
