Speaking at a press briefing, Jayasinghe said the party had informed relevant authorities, including the Defence Secretary, in advance about the event scheduled for May 18 near the War Heroes Monument. However, he claimed that police intervention prevented the tribute from taking place.
He stated that the incident violates fundamental rights and confirmed that the party has filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka.
Jayasinghe also alleged inconsistencies in how commemorative events are handled across the country, claiming that similar memorial activities in other areas had been allowed without similar restrictions.
He further accused the government of applying double standards in administrative decisions related to public gatherings, particularly in the North and South.
Criticizing recent governance approaches, he warned that such actions could deepen public mistrust and undermine national unity. He also commented that current policy directions pose risks to stability even in the absence of active conflict.
