According to authorities, the maximum retail price for a kilogram of local Keeri Samba rice is Rs. 260. However, the trader had sold a kilogram for Rs. 380, overcharging a customer by Rs. 120.
The case was filed following a raid carried out by officers of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) in the Nuwara Eliya District.
The Hatton Magistrate’s Court delivered its ruling today (May 20) after the shop owner admitted guilt, ordering the payment of a Rs. 100,000 fine.
The Consumer Affairs Authority also urged consumers to remain vigilant when purchasing essential items, advising them to check the maximum retail price, avoid paying more than the regulated amount, and request bills for purchased goods.
Consumers were also encouraged to report traders selling goods above regulated prices through the CAA hotline on 1977 during office hours.
