Several representatives of the SCO also participated in the discussions.
Established in 2001, the SCO consists of 10 member countries, with Sri Lanka currently holding dialogue partner status. The organization functions as an international political, economic and security bloc and is regarded as the world's largest regional organization in terms of geographical reach and population.
During the meeting, Secretary General Yermekbayer expressed appreciation for the government's focus on credibility, public welfare and transparency, and stated that the possibility of granting full membership to Sri Lanka could be considered in the future.
He also expressed willingness to support government-led development projects through investment initiatives and extended an invitation to Sri Lanka’s Transport Minister to participate in the next SCO Ministerial Meeting on Transport.
The Secretary General further commended the progress made in Sri Lanka’s ports sector and expressed interest in inviting the Minister to the upcoming SCO Heads of Ports and Logistics Meeting.
Responding to the invitation, Minister Karunathilaka thanked the SCO Secretary General and said a delegation comprising officials from the Ports Authority would be encouraged to participate. He noted that the government is working to expand port capacity and requested technical, logistical and investment support for the sector.
The Minister also sought information regarding a proposal to establish a development bank within the SCO framework.
Meanwhile, highlighting growing tourism interest in Sri Lanka, the SCO Secretary General said there are plans to invite Sri Lankan travel agencies to China and facilitate tourism promotion activities across SCO member countries.
