He said the guidelines aim to prevent the inclusion of inappropriate decorations and activities during Vesak celebrations. The move follows public concern and social media discussions during the recent New Year season over activities seen as going against traditional customs.
The Deputy Minister noted that the guidelines have been issued to avoid similar controversies during the sacred Vesak period and to preserve its religious significance. He added that all District Secretaries, Divisional Secretaries, and other relevant officials, along with members of the Maha Sangha, are expected to adhere to these instructions.
According to him, the guidelines have already been circulated among relevant authorities to ensure proper implementation and to promote a meaningful celebration of Vesak in line with its true spirit.
This year, Vesak Poya falls on May 30, with Vesak Week scheduled from May 27 to June 2.
