The water level of the Wellawaya Alikota Ara Reservoir has risen rapidly due to heavy rainfall in its catchment areas.
As a result, three spill gates of the reservoir have been opened by two feet each, releasing water into the Kirindi Oya.
The water level of the Kirindi Oya has also risen following the release.
Residents living along both banks of the Kirindi Oya, as well as those using the river, have been urged to remain vigilant and exercise caution.
