The renovation was carried out with the aim of improving passenger infrastructure while preserving the historical character of one of Sri Lanka’s most significant railway stations. Only selected sections of the station were upgraded to maintain its architectural heritage.
The completed works include refurbishment of the main building, improvements to sanitation facilities at Platforms 5 and 6, and overall environmental beautification of the station premises. The project, which cost around Rs. 35 million, was financially supported by Akbar Brothers.
The renovations were carried out over a six-month period under the supervision of the Department of Archaeology, with consultancy support from NIO Engineering.
Maradana Railway Station, the second-largest railway station in Colombo District, serves thousands of local and foreign passengers daily, connecting multiple regions across the country. Authorities have planned further phased upgrades to enhance the station’s facilities.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake stated that despite economic challenges in recent years, the renovation was completed within six months, ensuring sustainable improvements to the station’s main infrastructure.
He also stressed the importance of protecting and maintaining public assets, calling on both passengers and railway staff to take responsibility for preserving national infrastructure. The Minister further noted that public support for protecting renovated facilities, as seen recently at the Central Bus Stand in Pettah, reflects growing social awareness.
Senior officials including representatives from the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat, Sri Lanka Railways, and Akbar Brothers attended the event.
