Former MP Premalal Jayasekara was arrested yesterday (21) by Sri Lanka Police in Nuwara Eliya over allegations of threatening an individual with a firearm.

Police stated that the incident took place following a heated argument between Jayasekara who had arrived in Nuwara Eliya with his family and a group that had travelled from Avissawella on a trip.

The situation is said to have escalated, during which the former MP allegedly pulled out a pistol and threatened the group. He was taken into custody based on a complaint lodged with the police.

Authorities also noted that the firearm in his possession had been issued under a license from the Ministry of Defence, which had expired in 2025.

Further investigations into the incident are currently underway.
