The decision follows discussions held between the President of Sri Lanka and the visiting Japanese Parliamentary Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs in February 2025, during which attention was drawn to possible Japanese assistance for improving public transportation.
Subsequent talks with the Japanese Embassy in Sri Lanka confirmed the grant assistance.
The proposal submitted by the Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development to obtain the buses was approved by the Cabinet, enabling the country to proceed with receiving the grant.
