The Ministry said the Division has been created with the primary objective of prioritising the safety and wellbeing of Sri Lankan nationals in the region. With approximately one million Sri Lankans living and working across Middle Eastern countries, the Government has identified their protection as its foremost concern.

The Unit will also assist non-Sri Lankan nationals currently in Sri Lanka who may face issues due to the evolving situation. Such matters will be addressed on a case-by-case basis, the Ministry said.

The Emergency Response Unit will operate on a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week basis.
