Several railway trade unions have launched a 48-hour strike from midnight yesterday (16), demanding, among other matters, the removal of the current Railway General Manager.
The strike comes amid several demands raised by railway trade unions. Chairman of the Railway Station Masters’ Association Sumedha Somarathna also commented on the ongoing trade union action.
Meanwhile, several train services were cancelled by the Railway Department yesterday afternoon, even before the strike began, causing inconvenience to passengers who arrived at Colombo Fort Railway Station.
Despite the strike, the Railway Department said plans had been made to operate trains on all railway lines as far as possible.
Accordingly, 13 trains were scheduled to operate on the Coastal Line this morning, while 11 services were planned on the Chilaw Line, 15 on the Main and Northern Lines, and seven on the Kelani Valley Line.
However, the Railway Department warned that the scheduled services could be delayed or cancelled due to the ongoing strike.
