The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Labour Cooperation between Sri Lanka and Thailand, along with a supplementary agreement on the employment of Sri Lankan workers in Thailand.
The agreements are aimed at establishing formal cooperation between the relevant authorities of the two countries in the field of labour migration and creating a structured mechanism for the transparent and efficient recruitment and placement of Sri Lankan workers in Thailand.
According to the proposal, the agreements will also seek to strengthen the protection of Sri Lankan workers employed in Thailand by ensuring their legal rights, welfare and security.
The proposed framework is expected to introduce measures to improve cooperation between the two countries in managing labour migration and to help prevent human trafficking and other forms of exploitation of migrant workers.
The Memorandum of Understanding on Labour Cooperation will be valid for a period of five years, while the accompanying agreement will establish specific arrangements relating to the employment of Sri Lankan workers in Thailand.
The proposal was submitted to the Cabinet by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism and was subsequently approved.
