The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has filed a new case against suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, alleging contempt of court under the Contempt of Court, Tribunal or Institution Act and the Judiciary Act.
The case pertains to an incident that occurred on April 10, when Mr. Tennakoon left the court premises in his official vehicle after being granted bail. The CID argues that his actions constitute contempt of court, leading to the filing of formal charges. Mr. Tennakoon and the driver of the vehicle have both been named as respondents in the case.
The matter was taken up today (25) at the Matara Magistrate’s Court, where Additional Solicitor General of the Attorney General’s Department, Mr. Dilipa Peiris, delivered an extensive submission on behalf of the prosecution.
Appearing for the defense, Attorney Anuja Premaratne argued that the act was not committed with any deliberate intent and stated that bail could be granted for such an offense.
The case has drawn significant public and media attention, as Mr. Tennakoon remains under suspension and continues to face multiple legal challenges related to his conduct while in office.
