Tragedy struck in Kandy as four elderly devotees, who had traveled to the sacred city to pay homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic and attend official duties, passed away during their visit. Director of the National Hospital in Kandy, Dr. Iresha Fernando, confirmed the deaths, stating that all individuals were over 65 years of age.

According to Dr. Fernando, post-mortem examinations have revealed that one of the deceased had succumbed to a heart attack. However, the causes of death for the other three remain inconclusive, with the Forensic Medical Officer issuing open verdicts and referring the cases to the medical examiner for further investigation.

In addition to the fatalities, Kandy's health services have been under considerable pressure. Over the past week, nearly 300 people have been admitted to the National Hospital for various medical conditions. A significant number of these patients had fainted due to dehydration, likely a result of the scorching weather and the physical strain of long pilgrimages.

To address the situation, nine temporary health centers have been established around the Sri Dalada Maligawa, one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka. These centers have collectively treated nearly 3,000 individuals over the past few days, offering first aid and relief to pilgrims and visitors.

Authorities are urging elderly visitors and those with pre-existing health conditions to take necessary precautions, stay hydrated, and seek medical attention if they feel unwell during their stay in Kandy.
